Spanish 21

All You Need to Know About Spanish 21

Spanish 21, a variant of the traditional version of blackjack, is owned by a game publishing firm called Masque Publishing Inc. The game has a set of rules that are quite unique to it. These however can sometimes change depending on the casino you are playing at. Some of these rules offer players an advantage that may be more than what you would get in the traditional version of the game. This makes it a great game for players who want a casino card game that has a low house edge. Players interested in Spanish 21, should keep a few aspects in mind. Here are some of them:

Number of Cards

In this game, 6 to 8 decks of 48 cards are used, a deviation from the standard deck count of 52. This is because the four 10s in the decks are not played in Spanish 21. This, however, turns the odds in the casino’s favour. To counter the effects of the increase in house edge, most casinos offer a host of bonuses that players can win through the game. Some such casinos where you can play Spanish 21 are:

Rules of Spanish 21

The values assigned to the cards in the standard version of blackjack are the same as those used in Spanish 21. A hole card is dealt to the dealer, and he has to stand on 17 and hit on 16. Most casino rules require the dealer to hit a soft 16. The winning hand in the game is Blackjack and the payout for it is 3:2 – irrespective of the dealer’s hand. The payout for insurance is 2:1 in Spanish 21. Players have to split, stand or hit based on the rules followed in the traditional version of Blackjack.

Players can double down after they split whenever they want to. They can draw any number of cards they want post splitting. They are allowed to split any hand up to four times, and also surrender late. A hand can be conceded (forfeited or surrendered after doubling down) to bring in double the second bet amount. Some casinos permit players to double double down. This means that the player can double twice. This is a rule variant that offers an edge to the player.

When the first two cards are dealt, and the dealer’s up-card has a face card or an Ace, he will have to check the rest of his cards for Blackjack. In case the dealer does not have a blackjack, the game will commence. On the other hand, if the dealer has the winning hand, the player loses the game. Players with a winning hand of their own will get paid 3:2 even if the dealer has blackjack.

Side Bet – Match the Dealer

A side bet that most casinos offer in Spanish 21 is called Match the Dealer. Two aspects allow qualifying for the side bet – the rank and suit of the cards dealt to the player and the dealer. The side bet is won when the player’s first two cards are of the same rank as those of the dealer’s up-cards. This applies even to just one card from the player’s hand. The payout from this is good for the player. However, it will be higher if the hands match in both rank and suit.
